Caroline Borghetto

Shop Artist of the Week

We’re excited to introduce our new Featured Artist of the Week, celebrating the talented creatives whose work is available in our gallery shop and helping support our local arts community. Celebrating a new artist every fortnight.

This week, we’re proud to spotlight Caroline Borghetto.

A contemporary abstract artist based in Torquay, Victoria, whose thoughtful and layered works explore the complexities of connection, belonging and identity.

Working primarily in painting, Caroline has developed a distinctive visual language characterised by restrained compositions, layered forms and subtle gestures. Her practice sits in the space between structure and disruption, examining how relationships, systems and identities are shaped by both closeness and distance. Rather than presenting fixed narratives, her work invites viewers to consider the quiet exchanges and tensions that often define our experiences of belonging.

Drawing on ideas of cultural proximity, inherited identity and the experience of existing both within and outside established structures, Caroline's paintings explore what it means to observe, negotiate place and find connection in an increasingly complex world. Through abstraction, she creates spaces for reflection, allowing meaning to emerge through nuance rather than certainty.

Materiality is central to Caroline's practice. Working across Belgian linen and clear-primed cotton canvas, she intentionally allows the surface to remain visible beneath translucent layers of paint, graphite and pencil. The result is a body of work that balances delicacy with emotional depth, revealing traces of process while maintaining a sense of restraint and quiet power.

Since beginning her exhibition journey in 2022, Caroline has quickly established herself as an emerging voice in contemporary Australian abstraction. Her achievements include participating in the Neighbourhood Lab Residency at Platform Arts in Geelong, as well as being shortlisted for both the Omnia Art Prize and the Hue & Cry Art Prize.

Today, Caroline works full-time from her studio within the Ashmore Arts artist community on Wadawurrung Country, continuing to develop a practice that thoughtfully explores the spaces between people, places and identities.
