Each strand of seaweed, with its beaded form, mirrors the rhythms of breath and tide, symbolising the threads of ancestry and the enduring bond with Seasonal Shifts and of Country.
A meditation on belonging, this is a dialogue between body and place, where each layer reveals stories of identity and the vessels that are both human and ocean-born.
Untitled (Seaweed Series) - Ferne Millen
I am an artist based on Wadawurrung Country, where my practice is shaped by a deep respect for land, sea, and story. For over 25 years I have created portraits, performance imagery, and visual narratives for artists, organisations, and global brands, always with the same intention: to honour people and place through work of clarity, presence, and authenticity.
Today my practice is evolving with the seasons. Alongside photography, I am working in oil painting and installation, exploring new ways of expressing connection to Country and heritage. These forms allow me to bring texture, light, and materiality into dialogue with the stories I tell, creating immersive experiences as well as striking images.
Whether through a commissioned portrait, a collaborative project, or an installation, I bring the same grounded approach: listening deeply, creating with integrity, and delivering work that is both powerful and timeless
