In The Last Day of Winter, the artist reflects on the final season of life through the image of an elderly woman. Winter, in this work, becomes a metaphor for life’s closing chapter — a time marked by fragility, quiet, and reflection.
The woman is portrayed not only in the stillness of her final day but also with the strength and dignity carried from a lifetime of experience. Gentle tones and softened light evoke both fading and endurance, suggesting that even in decline there is beauty and meaning.
By linking the cycles of nature with the human journey, the artwork reminds us that each season has its place. Winter may be the last, but within it lies acceptance, wisdom, and a deep reverence for all that has been lived.
The Last Day of Winter - Elida Luciarte
Elida, born in Guernica (Spain), studied Fine Arts at the University of the Basque Country before furthering her education in Painting at the University of Ballarat. Primarily drawn to figurative art, she shifted her focus to seascapes after moving to the Surf Coast, where the ocean quickly became her main source of inspiration. Over time, she became well known for her seascapes and numerous commissions, and for her most recent exhibition she explored her deep fascination with water. Yet, she always returns to figurative art, allowing both themes to remain central to her artistic journey. Elida also runs the Torquay Art Hub, where she leads art classes and serves as an art representative. Her art classes are well-regarded for their focus on traditional painting techniques and her thoughtful teaching approach. She finds great fulfillment in mentoring the exceptionally talented artists in her programs, fostering a vibrant and creative community.
