When I flew to France seven and a half years ago, it was snowing for days, I would sit in my little art studio painting away, occasionally looking out the window at the growing level of snow covering the surrounds. I made my first snowman one evening, my host laughed and thought it was funny, she laughed as I installed eyes and a nose into the snowman. I was happy. This work is a recollection of that time, infused with melancholy, joy and peacefulness. The gentle wind would blow the snowflakes in different directions and I found it joyous to watch.
Snowfall in Paris - Samuel Condon
I grew up on the surf coast and was taught to paint and draw by the late local artist Jiří Tibor Novak. Whilst in high school I was awarded an art prize allowing me to study life drawing under the late local artist Ray Woods. Then studying bachelor of fine arts majoring in drawing at the VCA, followed by a masters in fine arts majoring at RMIT and Master of art Curatorship at the university of Melbourne. I’ve been a four time finalist in the Archibald prize, three time finalist in the Brett Whiteley traveling scholarship, and now living between the surf coast and Paris, where I study the master painters at the Louvre and musee d’Orsay. Over the past few years I’ve undertaken numerous art residencies in France which has helped develop my painting practice inspired by the French impressionists.
