My painting “Seasonal Help” is a nod to how modern inventions make seasonal transitions more comfortable in contemporary life. While the work offers an amusing reflection on our way of living, it also raises important questions: As climate change progresses, will we rely increasingly on man-made comforts — and at what environmental cost?
Influenced by both Surrealism and Modernism, my work explores contemporary Australia’s relationship with the landscape, aiming to evoke a sense of wonder and curiosity.
“Seasonal Help” is acrylic and oil on canvas.
Seasonal Help - Kathryn Junor
After many years of drawing and some early explorations in painting, I have spent the past decade dedicated to developing my painting practice. During this time, I’ve exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions across Victoria and Interstate.
My work uses vibrant colour to create spatial depth and highlight key elements within each composition. The subjects I paint emerge from a fusion of the real and imagined places, objects, and figures that blend memory with invention.
In recent years, my practice has evolved. While the landscape once stood as a central focus, I now seek to tell more layered visual stories. This shift has led to the inclusion of still life elements alongside natural environments, expanding the narrative possibilities within my work.
The Surf Coast has been a constant source of inspiration, and I’m sure it will continue to be. I feel fortunate to paint from my studio at Ashmore Arts, which overlooks the beautiful Spring Creek Valley.
