The process and materials are inspired by the content of the painting. I begin with the application of base layers of paint and magazine collage. These layers are then partially sanded back, revealing hidden textures and colours underneath, which mimic the age and complexity of bark and foliage. Additional layers of paint are applied, sometimes thickly, sometimes as translucent washes, allowing previous layers to subtly show through. This process brings a natural depth to the painting, which I accentuate by cutting into the wood to bring forward or set back branches.
Scrub Sentinel - Jack Standaar
I am a painter and mixed media artist who is lucky to call the Surf Coast home, enjoying all the natural beauty it has to offer. My favourite place to be is the forest in winter, a time and place to reset in cold quite solitude, where even the trees seem to rest. I find that each season has it's own desirable aspects and lends itself to different environments. Who has seen the passing changes of seasons more than a weathered old tree.
The deep grooves and twisted knots of this timeworn giant show what it has endured. The gnarled limbs have dropped their leaves to mulch the ground below where the saplings grow. As I take in the enormity of his presence, I wonder what he has seen and what he is yet to see.
