Becoming a mother this year has been a profound, life-altering transition that reshaped how I see the world. Much like the seasons, motherhood brought waves of change. I began to notice parallels between the cycles in nature and the rhythms of early motherhood—the unpredictability, the tenderness, the exhaustion, and the awe. This painting became a way to process those feelings. The wide color palette reflects the spectrum of emotions I navigate in this stage of life. Each layer represents a different phase, just as the seasons unfold one into the next. In painting it, I found a language for what felt too complex to put into words. Rooted in both observation and feeling, my work is a response to the quiet beauty of natures strength and how these seasonal transitions mirror our own internal shifts.
Roots - Suraya Francis
My work explores the emotional depth of seasonal shifts through bold, expressive use of colour. ‘Roots’ is a reflection of how I experience the world where nature’s shifts are not just visual, but deeply felt. I’m drawn to the way elements like light, water, and earth transform with time, and I use these changes as a language to convey mood and movement. This painting allows me to honour both the beauty of impermanence and the strength found in connection.
