Video work projection with custom frame
190cm (W) x 118cm (H) running time 8min 28sec.
Originating from 8mm films from my family archive, ‘Reel Memory’ fuses every frame bound together by the cameraman’s motion. The illusion of filmic movement is halted, whilst simultaneously revealing what lies beyond the frame.
These compressions of time from are pulled into the present by my longing to re-experience the past.

Reel Memory - Laura Dubsky
Existing at the intersection between photography, film, time and memory, my practice explores time as a construct, and examines structures of power within human relationships and the natural world.
Engaging with found photographs and archive footage as a medium, I am drawn to materials from the analogue era due to their inherent qualities of time. These mementos present themselves as the ideal vehicle with which to examine notions of time itself, specifically the western perception of time as linear.
Standing astride the crossroad of photographic technologies, my work has traversed the transition from analogue to digital, and continues to exist in this space between.
By sourcing, recategorising and manipulation of this collected imagery, through techniques such as experimental editing, collage, juxtaposition and Mis En Abyme, I am looking to develop a visual language to examine our reality of time and memory, and our relationship with the natural world.
