Oil on Canvas
60cm x 60cm Framed
This painting is inspired by the shifting light over the Torquay coastline, where the horizon often transforms dramatically as the sun breaks through heavy clouds. The work explores the contrast between shadow and radiance, evoking both the power and serenity of the sea.
Using blended brushwork, I created smooth transitions in the sky and the central path of reflected light. The palette knife was applied to the waves and foam in the foreground, adding texture and movement to the surf. Through layering and tonal contrast, the piece captures a fleeting moment of light and atmosphere unique to the coast.
Pathway to Light - Yunjung Choi
I am a landscape artist based in Torquay, on Victoria’s Surf Coast, where the dramatic meeting of sea and sky provides constant inspiration. My work draws from the natural beauty that surrounds me — the ever-changing moods of the ocean, the play of light across clouds, and the shifting colours of the coastline.
My work
Through blending techniques and expressive palette knife textures, I aim to capture both the power and the stillness of nature. Each painting seeks to evoke atmosphere and emotion, inviting the viewer to experience not only what is seen, but also what is felt when standing before the vastness of the sea and sky.
Living by the coast shapes my creative practice every day, and my paintings are a reflection of that connection — moments of light, movement, and depth drawn directly from the natural world around me.
