Watercolour and pastel on paper
70cm (W) x 89cm (H) Framed
Eucalypts have always felt like old friends to me, quiet, steady, and full of stories. They’re more than just part of the landscape; they’re part of us, holding our memories, sharing our energy, and grounding us when we need it most. Through my work, I explore this bond, painting love notes to the way we hold space for trees and they hold space for us. ‘Old Friends’ features the grand mountain ash of my childhood who’ve bared witness to so many of my adventures, secrets and mishaps.
Painted in loose layers of watercolour with hand-drawn pastel marks, I enjoy exploring the balance between control and spontaneity. My aim is to capture both the subtle beauty of the Australian landscape and the quiet energies that surround you when wandering through the forest.
Old Friends - Natalie Martin
Natalie Martin’s artistic process is deeply intertwined with her choice of mediums and unique style, which reflect both her connection to nature and her pursuit of creativity. Working primarily in watercolour, Natalie embraces the fluid, unpredictable nature of this medium, allowing her to capture the delicate nuances and colours of the Australian landscape. Watercolour’s transparency and movement mirror the natural world, its ever-changing light, textures, and patterns. She often layers these washes with hand drawn pastel details, creating depth and texture that evoke the quiet yet powerful energy found in nature. This combination of watercolour and pastel allows Natalie to convey the harmony between control and spontaneity, offering an intimate portrayal of the flora and landscapes she so lovingly depicts. Her style, rooted in observation, presence and a deep respect for the subject, adds an emotional dimension to her work, inviting viewers to slow down and reflect on their own connections to the natural world.
