Recycled, de-threaded t-shirt wall installation.
The recycled t-shirts that I have selected were chosen for their colour as a representation of my hometown, Portarlington at the special times when the canola fields blossom into blankets of yellow that hug the fields and hills leading towards Port Phillip Bay. Every time I drive into town, I see the ways the colours combine with the light of the bay, the glistening light dancing on the water makes the yellow brighter. It is a beautiful time of year, signifying the changing of the seasons, the coming of summer fun, then the quiet comforts of winter. The t-shirt weave has movement and volume; the pleats reveal the folds of the land and the life of the water. The fabric is comforting, the t-shirt a stable of our wardrobes, we all know the feeling of the fabric, we all love the feeling of our home.
Canola Fields, blue skies over Port Phillip Bay - Kate V M Sylvester
Concept fashion artist, utilising the t-shirt as a readymade art object, I have developed a unique process whereby each garment is meticulously deconstructed to reveal the weave within the fabric. The material is then used in installaiton, sculpture, performance, painting and design. My intent is to reveal and celebrate the potential materials of everyday materials we take for granted.
